Amazing things happen when you have famed AD100 designer Juan Pablo Molyneux bring a 1920s Spanish Colonial-style villa by Robert Farquhar back to life. For starters, you tend to capture the attention of the designeratti: Architectural Digest covered the 10,000 square-foot Pebble Beach home’s transformation in its August issue. Casa Ladera, after all, is a lavish “baroque fantasia” as the magazine put it—a tribute to California’s rich and storied history told in ornate tilework, opulent textiles and impeccable antiques. You also have the makings for one of the most significant real estate opportunities this year. The iconic estate, recently brought to market by Kim DiBenedetto of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Pebble Beach, is one amazing property—and naturally has an amazing price tag to match: $23 million.
Resting on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, Casa Ladera captures the imagination as soon as one enters through its doors. The estate boasts five bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms, five fireplaces, library, office, fitness room, media room and ocean views from Carmel Beach to the Fish Ranch and Stillwater Cove. Each room offers its own form of inspiration, courtesy of Molyneux’s mastery of detail.
“No attention to detail or expense has been spared,” said DiBenedetto. “Owning this iconic estate is like owning a piece of history at its best.”
The dining room—what Architectural Digest called Molyneux’s “grand gesture”—features walls sheathed in hand-crafted blue-and-white tile from France and a one-of-a-kind mural of San Francisco Bay, the hills, and the Spanish mission.
There is also the 17th Century French mantle in the living room, which lends a sense of history to the home. Touches such as inlay bleached walnut and maple floors, hand painted beam ceilings and marble accents also convey refinement. The added gallery and loggia above provide a bridge from the hand carved library to the master suite while allowing one to take in the Pacific Ocean and Stillwater Cove.
The exterior spaces were also thoughtfully prepared to create the warm embrace of California elegance. The outdoor kitchen area welcomes guests to a place of relaxation with a fireplace, dining area and sitting area. There is even a spa crafted from copper. It all makes you feel as if you have one foot in the present and one foot in the past.
The interior courtyard opens from the gallery with its own fountain and grand fireplace. Even the detached guest house measures over 840 square feet and includes its own living room, kitchen, laundry and full bathroom—although once guests arrive at Casa Ladera, they won’t want to leave.
And why would they? They are in the presence of amazing, after all.
